Insert Baked Beans Flatulence Gag Here | From The Archives

Back in 2011, SPC wanted to make a big splash for a baked beans themed product launch event.

Somehow, Studio Bauhaus (where I used to work) was tasked to create some visually fun stuff for, I think, a press kit — CDs, posters, flyers, tees, probably some other junk as well.

For my part, based on a specific flatulent-filled brief from SPC, I drew up this one-page comic — can't recall if it wound up as part of the press kit or maybe a trade magazine one-pager, or even used at all.

Oh, Yeah... I Forgot I Can Post Things On The Interwebs

Just now realised I haven’t blogged anything since [see blog post below this one]… not that it matters, based on the almost nonexistent site views.

So, I guess it’s time to update no one out there on… whatever.

I’ve been drawing up stuff for work, but not ready to showcase it, at least for another month (or more)… I do have some possible gems found in the archives, might be suitable page fillers for this blog in the coming days.

Whenever I take time off from work, I usually let the company know by email with an embedded doodle in the message. The one time I didn’t do that, my boss enquired “… where’s the doodle?”. I responded with the above doodle.

Slinky Kitty | A "What Was I Thinking?" Desk Drawer Project

Fact: animals adapt.

That was the inspiration for “Floyd”, the cat that swallowed a slinky toy — general character development that went from artboard to being placed into the desk drawer for years.

At the time, my goal was to branch out into self-authored illustration/story books. Or, by some miracle, get hired as a go-to illustrator for a top-tier publishing house (or any tier).

A lacked time, money, motivation, and a myriad of reasons benched the whole thing.

Verdammt! Jetzt Geht Das Schon Wieder Los! | Another Mrs. Berry Birthday Doodle

The Shape Of Things To Come | A Starlog Archive Cartoon

Little known made-up fact-less truth: Roland Emmerich — the guy who directed almost-extinction-level event movies like Independence Day (1996), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), and city-levelling films like Godzilla (1998) — originally wanted to be a cartoonist.

Circa 1990-ish, Roland fedExxed a bunch of sci-fi cartoon ideas to Starlog Magazine. In New York.
6-to-8 weeks later, Roland’s cartoonist dreams were crushed after learning the Starlog editor (in New York!) rejected ALL his cartoon submissions.

Since then, let us assume Roland has a maddenning obsession to see New York burnt to the ground as we continually witness superimposed movie extras in Times Square paying the price for his vengeance.

Easter Eggs: the film/TV posters in the background will inspire now-failed cartoonist Roland Emmerich in his soon-to-be films — “War Of The Worlds” (1953) inspires “Independence Day (1996); “Godzilla: King Of The Monsters” (1954) inspires “Godzilla” (1998); “The Earth Day Special” (TV - 1990) inspires “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004).

Although this toon was not published and technically not a member of Starlog Magazine's Cartoon Archive, this never-before-seen toon was recently inked up based on a patently stupid gag idea (see rough at right) that's hid in a drawer since 2004 after respectfully turned down by Starlog’s almighty editor (possible reasons: it wasn’t funny; too close to 9/11; it wasn’t funny… take your pick).

Thankfully, I’m not the vengeful type… I just mope and eat compulsively.

That's Soooo Dumb! Incorporated | Scribble-Dee-Doo-Dahs #071

What do you do when you’re frustrated with EVERYTHING?

Your only option is scramble out of your hidey-hole, raise your bunny fist in the air and scream out loud:

This was quickly drawn up, replying to a rambling, long-winded, nonsensical work-related email inquiry.

"Tower, This Is Ghost Rider Requesting A Slice-O-Cake" | Scribble-Dee-Doo-Dahs #065

Quick birthday doodle to my ex-Creative Manager and Top Gun aficionado, Dora.

Sidenote: I did a caricature of her in late 2020 along the same naval aviator theme - click here.

"I'm Grumpy Vader And I Approve This Message" | Stardate #001

A quick thumbs up! Grumpy Vader doodle after hearing the news my ol' Starlog magazine editor is gonna start up a new sci-fi/fantasy PRINTED magazine titled "Stardate."

It sounds like most-to-all past Starlog contributors will be onboard this new venture - this'll include cartoonists (yay!).

Estimated newsstand delivery date: late 2022.

In the meantime, to get back into sci-fi/fantasy headspace, I gotta catch up on all that has been going on in that genre — at the very least, glean whatever I can from the Google.

Nobody Respects The Value Of A Flying Household Cleaning Utility In The Empire More Than Trooper Potter | A Starlog Archive Cartoon

To avoid further ridicule, Trooper Potter fails to disclose he also traded his blaster for a "magical" stick.

Everybody Needs A Birthday Donut | Scribble-Dee-Doo-Dahs #064

Yet another spare-of-the-moment, and unsolicited, donut-themed birthday illo I posted on voice talent extraordinaire Jim Cutler’s facebook page.

What We Have Here Is A Total Lack Of Respect For The Law! | Caricature Corner 08

The latest in a line of caricature requests from my WPAs (Work Proximity Associates), this time with a distinct Smokey And The Bandit vibe.

And, yes, this father (reference photo below) and kids are haulin' a trunk full of bootlegged Coors beer in his most-beloved Fiat coupe across state lines, with a dusty column of law enforcement posse with Sheriff Buford T. Justice in the vanguard.

Update: And, of course, the client wanted another option - replacing the Sheriff and posse with a lighthouse and a winding road.

The new scenery is supposed to be Aireys Inlet, complete with sea captain-manned lighthouse, hence the pirate parlance signage reading “YARRRreys Inlet”.

She's A Multitasker | Caricature Corner 07

Just another overcast Sunday and ran out of excuses not to finally draw up this caricature for a work colleague’s netball lovin’, t-ball sluggin’, ballet performin’ niece.
